How To Rock Climb - Basic Techniques

I saw a great video on How To Rock Climb that outlines some basic rock climbing techniques and body awareness tips to help the new climber..

The learnings I took from this video are..

Do not over grip, hold on gently.
Why?.. Fatigue in the forearms, or “over-pumped” forearms, are a limiting factor that prevents new climbers achieving what they are capable of for their current skill level.
Over-pumped forearms impede grip strength, that directly affects hand-hold effectiveness.

Focus on keeping weight on legs.
Where’s the benefit?.. From a physical aspect, the legs are stronger and have a greater fatigue capacity than the arms.
The metal positive here is that, keeping the weight on the legs provide a general sense of balance and centred-ness. It provides a level of reassurance and confidence to the climber when foot-holds are well formed.

Focus pushing up with legs rather than pulling with arms.
This follows on from the previous point.. There is a simple body mechanics adage for climbing which says “climb with the legs, balance with the arms”.

Keeping arms generally straight.
How does that help?.. A few reasons here, the climber can reach higher, its easier on your arms, that is.. its harder to hold on with bent arms, and less stress and fatigue on upper arm muscles

Keep three points of contact on whenever possible.
Makes sense.. Moving one contact point at a time allows the climber to only concentrate on one variable at a time
arms”.. A simple process like, move one leg up the wall, push up with the legs, and then move one arm up the wall, is a good guide

Thanks to LifeStyleWebTV for posting a well presented video. Check it out…

How To Rock Climb – making it a social event

I found this great short video on learning How To Rock Climb with the assistance of a rock climbing guide.

Joining a rock climbing community, and heading out into nature, to take-on its vertical challenges with them, is a fun and safe way to participate in this wonderful sport.

Being part of a active community of like-minded enthusiast serves for a method to fast-track one’s learning of climbing, providing each other the necessary support, and inspire each other to greater heights.

Plus the social aspect of meeting people whom share the asme athletic passion as yourself, bonding together, and creating what could be long-lasting friendships

Make sure to watch the short video made available by Outward Bound Rock Climbing… there are a couple of neat tips in there!

Plus, it depicts the real welcoming, ethical and communal culture, being a member of a rock climbing club can offer..

How To Rock Climb – Climb with the legs, balance with the arms

Learning How to rock climb is fun, satisfying, and raises our awareness of the own body mechanics.

One of the most important principle often overlooked, is to conserve as much energy as possible during the climb. Minimising energy expenditure allow the climber to feel minimal physical fatigue, which has a flow-on effect of a more positive mental state.

To conserve energy, we need to use our body mechanics effectively. In doing so, the general rule of thumb is that we climb with our legs, and balance with our arms.

Our legs are much stronger, and more enduring of physical activity than our arms. To take advantage of this fact during a climb, we want our legs to be carrying our body weight most of the time.

In very basic terms, climbing requires the feet be well placed in strong holds, strong enough to support our body weight as we shift it to our legs. The  hands can then venture upwards in search for the next safe hold, within comfortable reach. The feet are replaced further up the wall, generally one at a time, and using the muscles in the legs, to take the weight of the body again.

Rock climbing is a demanding sport, both physically and mentally. It requires patience and careful planning prior to, and during the climb.

That said its all worthwhile, as the reward of completing a climb, has a tremendous feeling of personal fulfilment and satisfaction.
